Sons do Fundo brings today "Roxy Music" with their song More Than This. More Than This is a 1982 single by British art rock band "Roxy Music". It was released as the first single from their album Avalon. The song peaked at #6 in the UK. Although it only charted at #103 in the United States, it remains one of their best known singles there, and was covered by 10,000 Maniacs in 1997 for a successful cover which hit #25, which outperformed "Roxy Music"'s lone US Top 40 single Love Is the Drug(#30, 1976).
In popular culture, the song appears in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, since "More Than This" was one of the songs featured on fictional radio station Emotion 98.3.; Bill Murray performed the song in the film Lost in Translation, directed by Sofia Coppola. Murray sings in a scene where his character is at a karaoke party. His performance is included as a hidden track after a period of silence at the end of the soundtrack album; Emmie's cover of More Than This, appears in "Dancing Stage EuroMIX", as More Than This '99, as one of the eight Universal songs.
In 2009 it was named the 29th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.It is the highest song by a female on the list.
The video, directed by David Mallet, is a re-enactment of 23 record labels rejecting Joan Jett's first solo album and her subsequent rise to the top of the charts with "I Love Rock 'n Roll". Kenny Laguna, cofounder of Blackheart Records, makes a cameo as the Warner Brothers executive.

We Got the Beat is a song recorded by the American rock band "The Go-Go's". Written by the group's lead guitarist Charlotte Caffey, the band recorded the song in 1980 and it was released in May as a single in the UK on Stiff Records. The song's single release brought the Go-Go's underground credibility in the UK. The song climbed to number 35 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart due to the popularity of the song in clubs as an import.
The following year the Go-Go's re-recorded the song for their debut album Beauty and the Beat. Released in January 1982 as the album's second single, We Got the Beat became the Go-Go's biggest hit, spending three weeks at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, behind "Joan Jett & the Blackhearts" I Love Rock 'n Roll. F. R. David (born Elli Robert Fitoussi) is a Tunisian-born French singer.
During the early 1970s, he was a band member in the French rock band, Les Variations. His personal "trademarks" are his sunglasses and his guitar (a white Fender Stratocaster). His most recognised song was his hit Words (1982), which sold eight million Carrère records across the world, topped charts around Europe in late 1982, and reached No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart in Spring 1983, going on to becoming the 22nd best selling single in the UK during 1983.
The track's eventual UK success was caused by its exposure on BBC TV's Top Of The Pops. The disc was featured on the first edition of a special Euro-slot incorporated in the TV program. The song is a catchy, slightly plaintive mid-tempo ballad sung in a slender, high-pitched voice.
In 1983 Thomas Anders (later of Modern Talking fame) covered David's song "Pick Up The Phone" in German. In 2007 Mr. Oizo of Ed Banger Records sampled the song "Don't Go" on his song First Love, which features singer Uffie.

Amanda Meta Marshall was born in August 29, 1972 in Toronto, Canada), growing up in a biracial family to a Caucasian father and a Black Trinidadian mother. In several of her songs, Marshall has reflected on her racial identity "as a woman who looks white but is also half-black".
Marshall studied music extensively during her childhood, including at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. While performing on the Queen Street West bar scene in her teens, she met guitarist Jeff Healey, who was struck by her powerful voice and took her on tour.
She started her career signing a recording contract with Metalblade Records in 1991, but both parties agreed that they were not a good fit and went their separate ways. In 1995, Marshall signed to Epic Records, and released her debut album "Amanda Marshall" the same year. The album was a major success in Canada, generating a great deal of airplay and spawning six Top 40 hits -- "Let It Rain," "Beautiful Goodbye," "Dark Horse," "Fall From Grace," "Sitting on Top of the World," and "Birmingham," which remains her biggest hit internationally.

"Stop...Hammer time!" Today we have a major hit from the 90's, with U Can't Touch This, by "MC Hammer".
U Can't Touch This is "MC Hammer's" 1990 hit signature song, from his album "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt'Em". The album sold more than 10 million copies, due primarily to this single, and gaining multi-platinum certifications from the RIAA, and other Recording Industries.
Rick James sued Hammer for infringement of copyright, as the song basically consists of the prominent opening riff of "Super Freak", which is constantly repeated throughout. The suit was settled out of court when Hammer agreed to credit James as co-composer, effectively cutting James in on the millions of dollars the record was earning. James was accordingly credited as a co-author.
The song was a huge success chart wise: it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was also a big success in other parts of the world, peaking at #1 in Australia, the Netherlands and Sweden, and #3 on the UK singles chart.
The song's lyrics and catchphrases became common pop culture references, making sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle appearances on TV, movies, and pop culture generally. "You can't touch this" and "Stop... Hammer time!" in particular, were widely used. Even flashmobs were made with this song.

Today I bring one of my favorite childhood songs, I Can See Clearly Now, by Johnny Nash.
John "Johnny" Lester Nash, Jr. (born August 19, 1940) is an American pop singer-songwriter, best known for his 1972 hit, "I Can See Clearly Now". He was also the first non-Jamaican to record reggae music in Kingston, Jamaica.
I Can See Clearly Now is a Billboard Hot 100 Chart #1 hit song, written and recorded by Johnny Nash. It was a single from the album of the same name and achieved success in the United States and the United Kingdom when it was released in 1972. It was covered by many artists throughout the years, including a 1993 hit version by Jimmy Cliff, who re-recorded it for the motion picture soundtrack of Cool Runnings, where it reached the top 20 at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Today is "Sons do Fundo" first post in english, so I hope you all enjoy.
To start in a brilliant way, i've brought one of the greatest punk-rock bands of Portugal - "UHF" with Cavalo de Corrida.
"UHF" is a Portuguese rock band formed in Almada in the late 70's, more precisely in 1978, and the initial formation was composed of Américo Manuel (drums), Carlos Perez (bass guitar), Renato Gomes (guitar) and António Manuel Ribeiro (vocals, guitar).
The first concert of the group was on November 20th in 1978, and through out the years they've played with bands as "Elvis Costello & The Attractions", "Dr. Feelgood", "Tourists" and "Ramones".
In 1981, "UHF" gave 138 concerts. They were a major contributor to the boom of the "portuguese rock" in the early 80's because until then, the Portuguese publishers did not believe in rock bands that sing in Portuguese, and to tell the truth, the young Portuguese preferred the music sung in English.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
On November 24th, 2007, "UHF" celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with a concert at the nightclub Swell at Costa da Caparica.
The concert also marked the pre-release of a second disc of rarities.

Continuando na onda das Grandes Músicas Portuguesas, temos os Grupo de Baile, com "Patchouly".
Os Grupo de Baile foram uma banda portuguesa criada no "boom" do rock português do início dos anos 80. Começaram como um grupo de amigos que tocavam em bailes e festas regionais, originários do Seixal.
Em 1981 lançaram o single "Patchouly/Já rockas à Toa", que vendeu mais de 99 mil cópias, atingindo um grande sucesso, devido principalemente à música "Patchouly".
Em 1982 os Grupo de Baile lançaram o single "História Linda", mas não atingiram o sucesso e a fama pretendida.
Em 1999 actuaram no "Seixal Rock 99" que se realizou no Seixal, no Largo 1º de Maio, entre os dias 6 e 9 de Outubro.
Em 2006 tocaram na festa de comemoração dos 20 anos do programa "Febre de Sábado de Manhã" de Júlio Isidro onde tocaram os seus dois maiores êxitos em versões não censuradas, e onde tocaram outras bandas, como os Táxi(http://sonsdofundo.blogspot.com/2011/04/taxi-chiclete.html).

Como 2ºpost da colectânea Grandes Músicas Portuguesas, trago os Trabalhadores do Comércio com "Taquetinho ou Lebas no Fucinho"!
Os Trabalhadores do Comércio são uma banda de música portuguesa formada na década de 80 por Sérgio Castro e Álvaro Azevedo, músicos dos Arte & Ofício, juntamente com João Luís Médicis que tinha 7 anos quando a banda começou a sua carreira.
Alcançaram grande sucesso com temas como "Chamem a Polícia", "A Cançom Que o Abô Minsinou", "A Chabala do Meu Curaçom", "Apunhalaste a Minha Mãe", "Molhareita Fartura na Tua Tassa Quente" ou "Taquetinho Ou Lebas Nu Fucinhu", música que vão poder ouvir aqui. Em 1986 participaram no Festival RTP da Canção com o tema "Tigres de Bengala", que se classificou em primeiro lugar exequo. Depois de alguns anos deparecidos, voltaram a fazer alguns espectáculos nos primeiros anos do século XXI, e encontram-se presentemente a preparar um disco para assinalar os 30 anos da fundação da banda.
Começa hoje no "Sons do Fundo" a colectânea Grandes Músicas Portuguesas, e desde já com uma grande banda: os Táxi, com "Chiclete".
Os Táxi são uma banda rock portuguesa de origem portuense e começaram em 1979,numa formação que incluía João Grande (voz), Henrique Oliveira (guitarra), Rodrigo Freitas (bateria) e Rui Taborda (baixo).
Denotando influências próprias da época, onde reinava o Pós-Punk, a New Wave e o Ska compunham e interpretavam temas originais cantados em inglês, no entanto, após serem descobertos pela editora Polygram, em 1981, que os convidou a gravar um álbum, essa situação alterou-se, visto que a condição é que o álbum teria de ser em português.
Pouco tempo depois aparece o álbum "Táxi", que incluía temas como "Chiclete", "Tv-Wc", "Taxi", “Vida de Cão” e "Lei da Selva", entre outros. Vendeu rapidamente mais de 70000 cópias, o que o levou a ser conhecido como o "primeiro Disco de Ouro do Rock Português". A apresentação do álbum decorreu em Cascais no ano de 1981, com a banda a actuar na primeira parte do concerto dos britânicos The Clash.
Em 1982, um novo álbum é lançado, "Cairo", cuja capa arrojada e polémica para a época, era uma lata em formato circular. Três dias depois de ter sido lançado atingiu o galardão de Prata, sendo-lhe atríbuido poucos dias depois, o de Ouro. Viria, anos mais tarde, a ser considerado pelo jornal Público como um dos 10 melhores discos de sempre da música portuguesa.
Entre vários álbuns lançados nos anos 90, em 2006 aceitam regressar aos palcos participando no espectáculo comemorativo dos 25 anos do programa Febre de Sábado de Manhã de Júlio Isidro e são um dos nomes mais bem recebidos nesse dia.
Nesse mesmo ano os Táxi voltam a dar concertos na Casa da Música do Porto, no Festival Porto Soundz (Porto) e no Festival de Vilar de Mouros. É neste ano que os Taxi anunciam que começaram a compor novos temas originais tendo como objectivo a edição de um novo trabalho.
Conciliando o trabalho de estúdio com os concertos, os Taxi actuam em http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif2008 nas Arenas Sagres (Lisboa e Porto) e no Festival da Juventude de Alfena. Em Setembro de 2008 e mantendo a sua formação de sempre, os Táxi anunciam publicamente, durante a participação num programa da RTP1 ("A Minha Geração", apresentação por Catarina Furtado), a edição do seu novo trabalho discográfico para Maio de 2009.
Num regresso aos anos 80, trago os Cutting Crew com o seu maior êxito "(I Just) Died In Your Arms.
Originários do Reino Unido, o seu estilo lembra o da banda Asia, mas injustamente, não atingiram o sucesso da mesma.
Em 1985, o vocalista Nick Van Eede uniu-se ao guitarrista canadiano Kevin Scott MacMichael com a ideia de formar uma banda. Mais tarde, com Colin Farley no baixo e Martin Beedle na bateria, a banda foi criada e o primeiro álbum é lançado e intitulado "Broadcast", que inclui dois dos grandes sucessos da banda, "(I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight" e a balada "I've Been In Love Before". O sucesso obtido foi suficiente para a nomeação para o Grammy na categoria Best New Artist em 1988.
Um ano depois, em 1989, o segundo álbum "The Scattering" é lançado, não atingindo o sucesso do primeiro, sendo que o terceiro álbum, Compus Mentus em 1992, passa completamente ao lado.
Em 1993, os Cutting Crew acabam e cada um toma um rumo diferente. No mesmo ano, Kevin MacMichael junta-se a Robert Plant, no álbum "Fate Of The Nations", e de 1998 até 2000 toca com Pete Best na sua banda de tributo aos Beatles. Morre em 2003, com 51 anos, vítima de cancro pulmonar. Já Colin Farley faz parte actualemente dos "The Tornados". O baterista Martin Beedle, passou a colaborar com nomes como Zucchero Fornaciari e Sarah Brightman, além de ser músico num cruzeiro. http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif Em 2006, a banda voltou com uma nova formação mantendo apenas o vocalista fundador, Nick Van Eede e assim permanece até hoje. O último album lançado foi o "Grinning Souls", em 2006.
Vindo dos 80's, temos hoje INXS, com "Never Tear Us Apart".
"Never Tear Us Apart" é um single lançado pelo grupo australiano INXS, em Agosto de 1988, pertencendo ao sexto albúm da banda, Kick.
É uma balada sensual, com toques de sintetizadores e com pausas dramáticas antes da quebra instrumental. O vídeo para a canção, com uma introdução alargada, foi filmado em vários locais de Praga, que serviu de cenário para outroas músicas como "Guns in the Sky"e "New Sensation".
O single alcançou a posição # 24 no Reino Unido, e permaneceu nos tops por sete semanas. Nos EUA, alcançou a posição # 7 na Billboard Hot 100.
Após sua morte, em 1997, o caixão de Michael Hutchence foi carregado até à St. Andrews Cathedral pelos restantes membros dos INXS e pelo irmão mais novo, Rhett, enquanto a "Never Tear Us Apart" era tocada como acompanhamento. Boas! Já há muito tempo que não postava nada, assim, hoje temos um daqueles sons que toda a gente conhece e é genial: Rod Stewart com "Do ya think I'm Sexy?"!
A música saiu em 1978, escrita pelo próprio Stewart e por Carmine Appice, produzida por Tom Dowd. Esteve uma semana no topo das listas britânicas em Dezembro desse ano e 4 semanas no topo da Billboard Hot 100, começando em 10 de Fevereiro de 1979. Também esteve no topo das listas australianas por 2 semanas.
A música foi criticada por muitos como uma traição às origens blues-rock de Stewart, mas ele e mais uns quantos desculparam-se logo, apontando que outros artistas respeitados, como Paul McCartney e os The Rolling Stones também lançaram álbuns com um cheirinho a disco...
Também foi alegado que está música foi parcialmente plagiada e assim ficou provado em tribunal, nomeadamente da "Taj Mahal", criada pelo músico brasileiro Jorge Ben Jor, em 1972.
Em 2004, a revista Rolling Stone classificou a música como 301ª na lista The 500 Greateste Songs of All Time.

Os Survivor lançaram esta música em 1982, com o álbum homónimo. A música foi criada a pedido de Sylvester Stallone, como substituta de outra grande música:"Another One Bites the Dust" dos Queen(aqui no blog:http://sonsdofundo.blogspot.com/2010/03/queen.html). Como o sr.Stallone não obteve permissão para usar a música dos Queen, escolheu esta, e muito bem!
"Eye of The Tiger" esteve no top dos singles do "Billboard Hot 100" durante 6 semanas consecutivas, atingindo o primeiro lugar em vários outros tops espalhadas por todo o mundo.
O single recebeu a platina pela "Recording Industry Association of Amerihttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifca" em 1982, o que representa dois milhões de discos vendidos nos EUA. Os Survivor ganharam o Grammy de Melhor Performance de Rock pela "Eye of the Tiger". Hoje trago um pouco de rock britânico dos anos 70/80, mais precisamente, hard rock, com os Whitesnake e o tema "Is this Love".
Os Whitesnake são uma banda de hard rock britânica formada em 1977. Entre os seus maiores sucessos destacam-se a balada "Is This Love", do álbum Whitesnake de 1987, e a pesada "Love Ain't No Stranger", do álbum Slide It In de 1984.
Logo após sua saída dos Deep Purple, em 1976, David Coverdale não perdeu tempo e no mesmo ano criou e lançou seu projecto a solo: Whitesnake. O segundo álbum desse projecto, Northwinds (1977) foi produzido por Roger Glover (do MK II dos Deep Purple) e contou com a participação de Ronnie James Dio (à época nos Rainbow com Ritchie Blackmore) nos 'backing vocals'.
A formação da banda que acompanhava Coverdale era Bernie Marsden e Micky Moody (guitarras), Neil Murray (baixo) e Dave Dowle (bateria). Em 1978 saiu o álbum considerado de estreia dos Whitesnake, Trouble. No ano seguinte, Jon Lord (também ex-membro dos Deep Purple) juntou-se à banda e na sequência vieram Lovehunter (1979) e Live...in the Heart of the City (1980).

Hoje trago uma loirinha dos 80's para dar música ao pessoal: Blondie, com "Heart of Glass".
Os Blondie foram formados em 1976, sendo o seu auge o período entre entre o final dos 70, princípio dos 80. Esta banda foi pioneira nos géneros musicais new wave e punk rock.
Após se conhecerem na banda The Stilettos, a vocalista Deborah Harry e o guitarrista Chris Stein formaram os Angel and the Snakes, juntamente com o baterista Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri no teclado e o baixista Gary Valentine, mudando depois o nome para Blondie, inspirados pelos comentários dos camionistas que frequentemente gritavam:-Hey Blondie!-para Deborah, ao passar na estrada.
Começaram por tocar no Club 51 em Nova Iorque e lançaram o seu álbum de estreia, Blondie, em 1976, que alcançou sucesso comercial primeiramente no Reino Unido. Plastic Letters, o segundo disco da banda, teve duas músicas nos tops britânicos. Em 1978, através do sucesso Heart of Glass, a banda alcançou sucesso mundial, tornando-se um dos ícones do New Wave.
